A distant cousin of the late Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1, the Toyota Aygo continues its happy journey. Called Aygo X, this 3rd project, which adopts SUV codes, is neither hybrid nor electric. A convertible version (Air Limited) is also available, only with automatic transmission.

This will not escape anyone: the market for so-called micro-city cars has gradually shrunk. The Peugeot 108, Citroën C1, Ford Ka +, Opel Karl, Opel Adam, Suzuki Celerio have disappeared from the market while others, such as the Smart, have chosen a purely electric solution. In this case, lower profitability for manufacturers and a kind of neglected by customers, who fall behind the SUV.

As a result, the offer is now limited to rare models such as the Fiat Panda City and Cross, the Hyundai i10, the Volkswagen uP! – also comes in an electric version – the Suzuki Ignis and of course the Renault Twingo. Another survivor, the Toyota Aygo, cousin of the late Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1. The developer decided to continue the adventure on his own with a 3rd project, Aygo X (pronounced Aygo Cross).

For the occasion, this new Toyota takes the SUV suit like its big sister, the Yaris Cross, from which it borrows the TNGA-B platform.

Tall, longer and with new two-tone and “spicy” colors (beige ginger, cardamom green, red chili and juniper blue), will this new Aygo X, whose entrance ticket is 15,990 euros, seduce?

Note, the Aygo X has an optional (€ 1000) serial or automatic transmission (S-CVT).

Available in five finishes (Active, Dynamic, Design, Collection and Air Limited), we had the Aygo X collection in our hands with a manual gearbox, with a charge of € 19,690 without penalties or bonuses.

Ergonomics and design

The Aygo X is directly inspired by the original Toyota X Prologue car unveiled in March 2021, especially in this two-tone Chili Red. We certainly do not find the same open mouth (although the mesh air intake at the bottom of the shield is impressive) nor the huge wheel arches, but the dynamic line is maintained.

However, the Aygo X Collection Chili Red leaves no one indifferent, especially the rear end and the black domes of its wheels, not to mention the large 18-inch wheels.

The Aygo X is larger than the previous version. Its length reaches 3.70 m (+23.5 cm), the width increases to 1.74 m (+12.5 cm) while it peaks at a height of 1.51 m (+5 cm). The wheelbase extends by 9 cm, to 2.43 m.

Like the exterior, the passenger compartment (16% larger) is distinguished by its simplified dashboard design, all in curves. It is accentuated at each end by intelligent aerators – circled in glossy plastic – in the form of a terrestrial sphere that rotates in all directions to direct air.

Like the Yaris Cross, we regret a stern side that accentuates the dark side of the cabin, despite the presence of a colored insert around the touch screen. For light, you should choose the convertible version, Air Limited.



And this despite the larger wheelbase. Thanks to my colleague Alexandre Lenoir who played the guinea pigs.


The narrow opening of the rear doors does not facilitate the entrance

Thanks to the increased wheelbase, the legroom for the two rear passengers is just right. But there are two disadvantages. The first is a slightly lower roof guard, especially for people over 1.77 m. increase.

Finally, the best are the front passengers, who gain comfort with the seats mounted higher and move backwards by 2 cm, thus allowing more space in the shoulders (+4.5 cm).

As for the trunk, its volume increases by 63 liters to offer a capacity ranging from 231 to 829 liters as soon as the seats are folded.

Comfort and equipment

Once installed in the cabin, we are faced with a very wide dashboard. This is due to the fact that the windscreen columns have been moved backwards, thus offering a wider field of view (+ 10%).

As in the previous version, the item that stands out the most is the instrument panel that is covered by a XXL lid. The latter incorporates a mini LCD screen on which various information about driving and car instruments are moved. Everything is controlled by the multifunction steering wheel.

The instrument panel includes a 4.2-inch mini LCD screen.

But what steals the show is the 9-inch touch screen (diagonal 22.86 cm) that equips the finish of our Collection. Also available in the traceable version. On the other hand, for beginner level finishes, you should be content with an 8 or 7 inch screen (diagonal from 20.32 to 17.78 cm).

This main screen has quick access keys on the left side that allow you to return to the home page. Basically, there are a number of functions (Media, Phones, Services, Vehicle, Profile, Road Accident and Parking Search) arranged like smartphone icons.

Toyota Smart Connect home infotainment provides real-time traffic alerts, geolocation of a car park and will enable new services in the future through remote or Over the Air (OTA) updates. ).

In use, Toyota’s system is easy to use and fluid, albeit a bit simple, especially when it comes to navigation. We will prefer Apple CarPlay (wireless for high quality finishes) or Android Auto. Note the presence of a single USB-A socket and an induction charger.

Handling and performance

To put it bluntly, despite the adventurous air, the Toyota Aygo X does not really appreciate getting out of town. We must say that with a length of 3.70 m and an extremely small turning radius of 4.7 m, she is the queen of slots.

It’s time to start Aygo X via the large button provided for this purpose. The three-cylinder snorts and sounds (a little too), especially when it comes to climbing the hill of Montjuïc’s old car-motorcycle track.

We have to admit that in terms of sound filtering, we knew better. For reasons of economy there is a direct connection to the body of the body. While driving, we noted – on the driver’s side – 62 B at 50 km / h and 71 dB at 130 km / h.

Thanks to its pocket size and despite the large 18-inch wheels, the Aygo X is very playful and easy to use in the city. The accelerations of its brave three-cylinder are sufficient, perhaps because the 72 hp and 93 Nm of torque have only 970 kg to drag.

Another reason for satisfaction, the steering wheel is expensive and the front is flexible. As for braking, pedal attack offers an honest answer.

Where the picture darkens is when you are about to leave the city. We suspected it, but it’s a fact: the freeway and the mountain walks are not his cup of tea. Indeed, you have to constantly play with the gear lever to restart the engine and take advantage of its extension, which makes it extremely noisy. Finally, when it comes to damping, if the front end is convincing, it will quickly punish your rear passengers’ buttocks with its rigidity.

It will be understood, the Aygo X prefers to play it cool in the heart of the cities where it will shine for its compact, but also for its low consumption that we will analyze in detail in the next part.

In terms of security, the manufacturer has developed an internal package called Safety Sense. Although a city car, the Aygo X, like the previous version, benefits from driving aids (ADAS).

The Aygo X combines sensors, a one-eyed camera and wave radar, giving it a pre-collision safety system to detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, also active at intersections. We also note the automatic headlight illumination and an emergency call system.

Line-keeping notification with line-keeping help, doing the job right without the white-line ping-pong effect, a track assistant and smart adaptive cruise control are in play. There is also a reversing camera as well as a rear seat occupancy reminder system (very handy for small children).

Autonomy and charging

Unlike the Yaris, the Aygo will only be available with an internal combustion engine. Get out of the hybrid, which would increase the weight of the car (940 kg) and its price.

Under the hood, there is a three-cylinder 1.0-liter gasoline engine that delivers 72 hp (93 Nm of torque) associated with a five-speed manual transmission. An option allows you to select a sequential or automatic transmission (S-CVT).

Toyota announces an average consumption of 4.9 l / 100 km (WLTP cycle) with the manual transmission versus 5 l / 100 km with the S-CVT transmission. Which makes it one of the most economical small town cars on the market. Note that the gas tank is rather small at 35 liters.

During our test, we achieved an average consumption of 5.2 l / 100 km on the vehicle computer, with urban use and some fast cuts, which would lead us to a range of 657 km. The Aygo X is therefore proud of its great sobriety and its low consumption even allows it to overshadow its micro-hybrid competitors.
