Tesla Model Y Performance

A 100% sporty version of the Model Y, Tesla’s electric SUV has clear ambitions: dynamic, efficient. So what is it worth on a daily basis? Here is our review of the Tesla Model Y Performance.

Imagine, an electric SUV that aims at both daily utility and dynamism at will. Designed for both family outings and short solo fun outings. In any case, this offers the aptly named Model Y Performance, straight from Berlin. The first Tesla model produced in Europe, at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, even allows itself some peculiarities. Design, comfort, performance, autonomy… Let’s go for a few days at the helm of the Tesla Model Y Performance.

Video is coming!
We could not resist the urge to share the written version of this essay with you as soon as possible, but know that it will be completed with a video in a few days, a little patience!

The Tesla Model Y Performance side view: familiar SUV

As an avid reader of Automobile Propre, you have already discovered the Model Y through our test drive a few months ago. We returned today with the “sporty” version of the family SUV, freshly cut from Berlin. Let’s start with what does not change: the style. The Model Y Performance retains the design of the “SUV-ized” Model 3, with a curved look and feel. Halfway between a compact and large SUV, it is 4.75 meters long and 1.97 meters wide. Generous dimensions however, attenuated by the plain black color of our test model. The proportions are even more flattering as the Performance version is slightly lower and has 21-inch wheels. A detail that makes the SUV more flattering than the corresponding Long Autonomy, only available in 19 or 20 inches.

Performance package: übersportiv!

Like the Model 3 Performance, the Tesla Model Y Performance is decorated with some sporty elements. From aesthetics to performance, the basic equipment includes:

  • Überturbine 21-inch wheels
  • Carbon fiber spoiler
  • Aluminum crank
  • Lower suspension
  • Performance brakes
  • Final speed 250 km / h (compared to 217 km / h)
  • 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds (versus 5 seconds)

Other small features are only available in the model Made in Berlin at present, there are. Note for example the presence of a rigid rear shelf as well as hooks in the trunk. Rear passengers also benefit from Tesla Glass double glazing. Both front and rear seats have evolved to offer improved lateral support with more curved edges. Finally, the serial number starts with XP7 for Berlin, except 5YJ (Fremont) and LRW (Shanghai).

Boat life: high-tech ergonomics

On board, the Tesla Model Y Performance places everything on the large 15-inch touchscreen. It is the one that functions as a dashboard and multimedia interface, not to mention all the controls and parameters of the vehicle. Without instruments or benches behind the wheel, everything is made from the large tactile plate. If the fans of natural controls (your servant is one of them) will regret some physical controls such as air conditioning, it is clear that the whole contributes to a very refined atmosphere in the passenger compartment. Two buttons with wheels on the steering wheel, two joystick, and the tablet are enough to control everything. Our black interior shines with its sobriety, both elegant and a bit futuristic. Special mention to the AMD Ryzen processor behind the screen, which most geek will appreciate the fluidity it provides under the fingers.

Mobile application: full control and Sentinel function

Let’s talk a bit about the Tesla mobile app, which is worth a few moments. Once installed and connected to the vehicle, the app gives us full control of Tesla Model Y performance. It is possible to lock and unlock the car or ventilate it by lowering the four windows slightly. The same applies to the opening and closing of the rear trunk, and the front trunk (opening only). Ventilation scheduling, start-up and speed limit adjustment are also available. Special reference to the Sentinel function, which allows you to monitor the vehicle environment and use the loudspeaker in real time. Very effective, the application responded quite well throughout our use. Note, however, that a poor network connection may cause some delays and delays.

Comfort and spaciousness: high capacity

The Tesla Model Y Performance welcomes us to even more comfortable seats, thanks to their optimized lateral support. The driver and passengers are all well seated. Only the middle rear passenger will feel a little in a less comfortable “hump”, as often happens. The electric SUV is no exception, but it is far from being the worst student in this field. Fortunately, the flat floor and headroom offer first-class space for the whole family. Foot space, which is very important, also eliminates the discomfort in the knees. The loading volume is 117 liters for the front trunk and 854 liters for the rear. In total, no less than 2,158 liters are available when the rear seats are folded! Almost flat, the acquired floor would almost make the Tesla Model Y Performance a perfect little tool when needed.

Electrical performance: functional or sporty?

Why not both? Under the hood (well, not really), the Tesla Model Y Performance is powered by a dual-engine four-wheel drive. This combines 377 kW (510 hp) for 660 Nm of torque. In practice, these values result in a very simple acceleration: 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds. Even more impressive performance given the approximately 1,995 kg of the electric SUV. Specifically, if the stopped starts make us “feel” the weight of the vehicle a little, this feeling disappears from 50 km / h. With acceleration set to Sporty, reactivity and reminders are there for all occasions.

In real life, overruns and interference are not a concern. Again, the feeling is impressive when you know you are in an SUV. The top speed of 250 km / h is also achieved without much effort (on a closed road of course). After the “kick” especially for the electrical operation, the Model Y Performance develops smoothly and quietly. A very remarkable comfort to the family on a daily basis, as well as to the leisure walks of the weekend. In normal times, we will favor the Standard mode, more than enough for each day.

Behavior and handling: controlled sportsmanship

Performance combined with behavior and comfort according to the sports characteristics of the beast! Unlike the Grande Autonomie model, here we are looking for sport and dynamism. A character embodied in our Performance lowered suspension and 21-inch wheels. Speaking of wheels, Tesla regular customers are almost unanimous: you are not really a member of the club until you rub one. It’s unfortunate that your tester is part of this not-so-exclusive club. A small gap of politeness on a road with irregular sidewalks would be enough to make the very first edge of my career. Sorry Tesla! Überturbine, is classy but vulnerable, overflows a little less than the tires, it would be Überperfect. Inevitably more stable, however, our Y remains surprisingly comfortable when attacking, without ever jumping even when rolling empty.

Ground connection is provided by a 255 mm wide Pirelli P Zero PNCS. Tires that are both efficient and quiet, locking the SUV to the pitch. At full acceleration and even at cornering, the roller is almost non-existent. Only adjusting the steering wheel will really change the feel of the steering wheel, depending on the mode of operation you have chosen. Finally, the only thing that betrays the size of the SUV is the high speed braking. Performance brakes are extremely effective, but create predictable swing when braking hard at more than 200 km / h (required). A problem that does not arise in everyday driving, fortunately. Overall, the sporty character of the Tesla Model Y Performance is therefore really present and well controlled.

Autonomy and charging: exemplary performance

Finally, let’s talk about autonomy. The Tesla Model Y Performance is powered by a useful 77 kWh (gross 82 kWh) battery. What do they announce autonomy up to 514 km, for an average consumption of 17.3 kWh / 100 km. For once, our Tesla is very close to the prices announced by the WLTP protocol. Apart from the phases from 0 to 100 km / h and other peak speeds (we assure you that no more was done than we needed for our measurements, the waste of battery was not the goal, not to mention the tire and brakes!) , and with meticulous respect the speed limits in our mixed courses, here are our results.

  • 16 kWh / 100 km at standard acceleration
  • About 508 km at standard acceleration
  • 17 kWh / 100 km in sport acceleration
  • About 479 km on Sporty acceleration
  • 20 kWh / 100 km in sporty driving + overtaking

Same remark as during our test for the Model Y: hard to be more efficient in the electric SUV category! In terms of charging, the Tesla Model Y Performance easily accepts superchargers up to 250 kW. Enough to recover almost 241 kilometers in just 15 minutes. On a long trip, it is just a short break and you leave. With 100 stations and 1,000 charging points in France and an average price of € 0.46 / kWh in France at the moment, charging is fast and economical. If needed, 11 kW charger for home charging.

Tesla Model Y Performance: from € 66,990

The Tesla Model Y Performance sells for € 66,990 (no bonus). In plain black (+ € 1,190), our test model appears at € 68,180. As always with Tesla, few additional options are offered, as the basic equipment is complete. From the huge panoramic roof to the reclining rear seats, there is not much to add. Only the black and white interior (+ € 1,190), the improved Autopilot (+ € 3,800) and the fully autonomous driving (+ € 7,500) are available. Finally, a towing hook is available that allows towing up to 1,600 kg. Clearly, it’s hard to be more efficient and effective in the family sports SUV category. And with “only” € 4,000 more than the Grande Autonomie model, for deliveries from August 2022 depending on the configuration, the Tesla Model Y Performance promises great success when ordering.
