The most dangerous events are not necessarily the most dangerous. The probability of an asteroid falling large enough to have an impact on a planetary scale is very small, but not zero. This is why it is advisable to prepare now for the day when the measurements of the orbit of a small celestial body will accumulate without the Earth leaving the “window of uncertainty”. Futura is hosting a live show on May 5 with two scientists to discuss the “Planetary Defense” program. We invite you to participate.
The impact or danger of a catastrophic celestial body (asteroid or) with Earth has adorned film productions for decades. And if these stories make it possible to create perfect blockbusters, the fact remains that the possibility of such an event is anything but fantastic.
Every day, twelve tons of space dust fall to Earth. Some of this powderin from time immemorial and another was released into space by comets as they sublimate their flying elements. To these ten tons, we can add about four times as much material that falls to Earth every day and comes from larger blocks, which, during its passage usually steamed in one of what we say ” ” Where .
Live Futura – Planetary Defense: come with us and ask your questions!
The most worrying thing is not this permanent rain of extraterrestrial pebbles, but these infinitely larger blocks, whose size varies between this a and that of a French section. Everyone has it in mind that life on Earth was experienced 66 million years ago and that radically changed everything on a planetary scale.
Certainly, the larger the asteroid, the less likely a collision is to occur. A percussion pendulum the size of one that changed its course foreverfalls to Earth about once every 100 million years. But that does not raise the question of what humanity could do if it discovered that one of these rocky mountains would collide with Earth a few decades later.
What appeal do we have? What solutions are there if such news is ever announced? Do space agencies and governments around the world have a Bruce Willis ready to go all the time? Would even these organizations know how to work together, like the movie? do not look up ?
Planetary defense: a program to prevent the threat of an object close to Earth
Today, the international program for the study, monitoring, measurement and assessment of its risk(celestial objects whose orbit crosses that of the Earth) is called: “Planetary Defense”. Except for his appearance potentially dangerous, two other projects are part of this program:
- The study and experimentation of the media to divert a possible future shock agent.
- a meeting (Planetary Defense Conference), every two years, where representatives of governments, space agencies and experts from all walks of life examine a scenario created from the beginning and test, in this gigantic simulation, the means that international coordination could use to avoid ( or not) disaster.
It is to discuss this planetary defense and the means that humanity is putting in place today to protect it and itsin the unlikely event of a collision with an asteroid large enough to represent a real danger, we invite you to meet on Thursday, May 5 at 8 p.m. on the stands , and from Futura-Sciences to talk with our two guests: Elisabetta Dotto, a scientist at Inaf (Rome Observatory) and Patrick Michel, CNRS research director at the C Κυte d’Azur Observatory, scientific mission leader of ESA.
