Construction

Exit the gold of the 13 inch version. That said, the frame of the 15-inch Envy x360 is almost identical. We discover it this time with a black dress, still made of anodized aluminum, accompanied by its hinges that allow the screen to rotate 360 °. It can thus be used as a tablet or in scene mode for video playback without disturbing the keyboard.

In scene mode: convenient for watching videos.

The touchpad responds, but we found a game of a millimeter or two that makes clicking somewhat uncomfortable to the touch. It is difficult to say whether only our test model is a victim of this small defect. Anyway, we did not have this problem with the 13-inch Envy x360. The keyboard is pleasant to use and the backlight of the keys is adjustable in three levels. You will notice the absence of a numeric keypad despite the size of the frame: the extra space is occupied by the speaker grilles.

The touchpad is not very well finished.

A fingerprint reader is located next to the arrow keys, easy to use to quickly unlock the computer. However, the webcam does not have an infrared drive and is not compatible with Windows Hello. It shoots at 720p and looks in picture quality, not very good in bright light and even less in the dark. A physical cache can be expanded by clicking the appropriate button at the top of the keyboard.

The webcam has a built-in physical cover.

The connection is a model here, as there is almost everything you could need: two USB-3.2 ports, one HDMI 2.0b port, one USB-C 3.2 DisplayPort port (which does not allow charging), an SD card reader and a mini jack slot. There is Wifi 6, while Bluetooth is standard 5.2.

The connection is complete.

Accessing the components is not really easy. It is necessary to remove two Torx screws and then the two rubber pads (with the risk of breaking) in order to unscrew the remaining Phillips screws. RAM as well as SSD M.2 are covered with a metal plate to limit the heating of components and are both replaceable – a good point for PC scalability. Also, the battery is easily removed.

The PC is difficult to disassemble.

The fans are surprisingly close together, but the computer’s heat remains very limited with a peak of 38.8 ° C on the keyboard. The computer is not too noisy either, but its breath is clearly audible: we noticed 37.1 dB emitted by the vent at a full reference point below the CineBench.

The computer does not heat up much.

Implementation

With the 2.1 GHz six-core Ryzen 5 5500U clocked in, the Envy x360 can’t handle heavy-duty processing, but it’s still more than enough for office automation. Combined with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD, it scored 88 in the CPU performance index, making it more efficient than the competing Intel Core i7-1165G7. But it is not at the level of Intel or AMD H series that have much higher TDP.

The built-in GPU makes it possible to play non-demanding games such as Diablo IIIat about 30 fps (high graphics) or Overwatch at almost 60 fps (low graphics). Finally, the SSD offers speeds of 1.8 GB / s in reading and 1.6 GB / s in writing, which is not great.

Screen

The Envy x360 touch screen displays Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). Unfortunately, there are many problems we have to deal with. First of all, the color accuracy is honestly low with delta E 7.6, even if the average temperature is decent (6190 K). The gamma is also moderate and the middle grays are under-exposed, which could be annoying for post-production photos or videos, for example. Staying at 27 ms also proves to be very high, but it does happen on most desktops.

With an average reflectance of 52.6%, the coating of the plate is very bright and unfortunately it is not the maximum brightness (291 cd / m²) that will cover the difference. Finally, only the contrast of 1320: 1 is quite good.

Mobility / Autonomy

At almost 1.9 kg on the scale and measuring 35.9 x 22.8 x 1.8 cm, this 15.6-inch Envy x360 is not the most portable. However, it fits in a classic backpack and its tablet form allows its use without discomfort in the knees. The charger is unfortunately still privately owned and weighs 281 grams.

In terms of autonomy, this computer did not work wonders with the 51 Wh battery. In Netflix video playback through the Chrome browser, the volume was increased to 50% and the screen was set to 200 cd / m², lasting only 7 hours and 30 minutes, which is true, but far from the best students.

Strong points

  • Very complete connection.

  • Flexibility of form 2 in 1.

  • Good headphone jack.

  • Scalable components.

Weak spots

  • Medium screen.

  • Reflective tile.

  • Difficult to disassemble.

How does scoring work?

We appreciated the 13-inch HP Envy x360 and its Oled display, but this 15-inch version is less attractive, especially due to the lack of Oled technology. If the 15-inch 2 in 1 format is a key point for you, the HP Envy x360 (15-eu0027nf) may be a good choice, especially since its office performance is very good. Otherwise, the computer is generally mediocre and its screen clearly tarnishes the image …
