The results of the first quarter of 2022 of Activision Blizzard allow me to update the monthly tracking file of the number of active users for the various entities, namely Activision, Blizzard and King. If Activision’s situation is right and King is on the rise again, this is not the case for Blizzard, which has the lowest number of players ever recorded in our survey, at 22 million.
In his house Activision Blizzard, and even if revenue is low, we know that the first quarter of the year is rarely the best. In terms of player numbers, we believe that Activision is still heavily dependent on the success of Call of Duty. However, there is a steady decline from last year.
Nothing bad, as there are still 100 million active users monthly in the first quarter, but there is no doubt that teams are working to offer games that will reverse the trend.
At his side King, and while it is far from the numbers of 2016, the company is surprisingly stable and is still extremely popular with its fans. In fact, it has the luxury of doing better than in the last quarter of 2021, returning to 250 million monthly active players. The developer of Candy Crush and most recently of Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is in great shape and does not seem to be going to stop any time soon.
BlizzardOn the other hand, it is in poor condition. As the chart below shows, the fall is painful and we went from 46 million users in the third quarter of 2017 to just 22 million in the first quarter of 2022. If World of Warcraft continues to be extremely profitable, the rest of the list will age and end. The year owes its salvation to a particular Diablo 2 Resurrected whose success was far beyond expectations.
However, Blizzard can see the end of the tunnel thanks to the releases that will take place in the coming months. The first to arrive will be Diablo Immortal whose release date is scheduled for June 2 on Android, iOS and … open beta on PC. And yes, Blizzard is finally broken and we can only congratulate the developers.
The first trials of Diablo Immortal, now more than a year old, have given you the opportunity to discover a game in the Diablo series that is exciting and full of good ideas. With more than 30 million people registered, MMARPG could be a huge success.
This Tuesday 26 April will also mark the arrival of another highly anticipated game: Overwatch 2. The first phase of external testing will begin and we hope to see the game reach the shelves by the end of the year. Admittedly, Activision Blizzard talked about postponing the game a few months ago, but I remain convinced that it was mainly the result of an announcement and that we can hope to see the game in 2022.
In a year we will be entitled to it World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. A new WoW expansion always has a positive impact on Blizzard’s finances and player numbers, and it should not be any different, especially given the features that make many players salivate, even though Blizzard seems to have some down from the pedal.
Closer to home, the Warcraft franchise will also be in focus in a few days. Blizzard will indeed reveal it warcraft game for mobile in May and we look forward to seeing what society has in store for us and especially in what condition the game is today. We remember that Diablo Immortal was announced in 2018 and it took almost 4 years to reach the players’ smartphones and tablets. Hopefully this Warcraft Mobile will not suffer the same delays.
Although Diablo 4 is still a long way off, it is a game whose potential should not be overlooked. Only this can generate colossal sales. However, he will have to wait until 2023, there is no doubt.
We will end with the possible surprises that Blizzard could have in store for us. This is his case new survival game which was announced last January, but one wonders if the company does not have a StarCraft project in the boxes … among other things.
